Take a look at the latest result from the Aston Park Stakes:
Famous Aston Park Stakes Winners
The Aston Park Stakes was over an extended mile and five furlongs until being shortened to a mile and a half in 2014. It had traditionally attracted St Leger horses from the previous season and potential Cup horses but the change in trip has put it on the radar for top middle-distance horses.
1991 winner Snurge won the St Leger in 1990 and he became something of a globetrotter for Trainer Paul Cole. His subsequent career wins included the Gran Premio di Milano (1991), Grand Prix de Deauville (1991, 1993) and the Canadian International Stakes (1992).
In 1997 the race was won by the popular stayer Persian Punch, trained by David Elsworth. He won 20 of his 63 races including the Henry II Stakes (1997, 1998, 2000) and the Jockey Club Cup (2000, 2002, 2003). He also won the Doncaster Cup and the Goodwood Cup twice but missed out on Ascot Gold Cup glory.
Sir Michael Stoute’s Telescope (2015) had missed the Derby as a three-year-old and produced a career-best to win the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot by seven lengths. He was later placed in Group 1 company including the King George and the decision was made to keep him in training at five. His six lengths win here promised much but he was retired after sustaining a tendon injury.
2017 winner Hawkbill was another top class performer, winning the Eclipse in 2016 and the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in 2017 for Godolphin. In his final season on the track Hawkbill won the Dubai City of Gold and the Sheema Classic, taking his career earnings to an incredible £3.54 million!
Key Aston Park Stakes Trials
The two key trials for this race in recent seasons have been the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown and the John Porter Stakes at Newbury. Four of the last eleven winners ran in one of those races last time out, two winning the Gordon Richards and one taking the John Porter.
Three of the last eleven Aston Park winners ran in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot next time. Crystal Ocean won both races in 2018 and the following season he went on to take the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
Aston Park Stakes Betting Trends
Five of the last eleven winners started favourite; Telescope (2015), Hawkbill (2017), Crystal Ocean (2018, 2019) and Al Aasy (2021). Only two of those winners were not in the first three in the betting, the only surprise winner being Astronereus at 14-1 in 2016. Horses aged four and five have accounted for the last eight winners of this race. An official rating of 107 or higher is usually required to win here, Crystal Ocean being the highest rated winner in recent seasons on 125 in 2019.
