David Pipe – Trainer Profile
David is the son of legendary 15 times British Champion Trainer Martin Pipe.
He won 22 races under point-to-point rules and twice under National Hunt rules as a jockey. His most significant win as a jockey was aboard dual Welsh Grand National winner Bonanza Boy in the Ludlow Gold Cup.
He learned his trade as a Trainer with spells at the yards of Michael Dickinson, Criquette Head and Joey Ramsden.
He trained 164 point-to-point winners before taking over from his father in April 2006.
His first winner came on 9th May 2005 with Standin Obligation at Kelso.
David Pipe – Key Trainer Stats
David hit the ground running as a trainer with 134 winners in 2006-07, the first trainer in history to saddle 100 winners in his debut season.
He also reached a century of winners the following season, netting a career-best £2.45 million in prize money in the process.
He has reached 100 winners four times subsequently, the most recent being 116 winners in 2014-15.
His fortunes suffered a dip in 2017-18 when sending out only 33 winners but he has consistently managed around the 50 mark since.
He has won 15 times at the Cheltenham Festival including Old Vic and Dynaste in the Ryanair Chase and outsider Western Warhorse in the Arkle Challenge Trophy.
Pipe has over 1,000 winners to his name and has trained a winner at every racecourse in the UK.
David Pipe Big Race Wins
David Pipe’s Grand National victory was undoubtedly a career highlight but he also has a fine record at Cheltenham, particularly in the handicap races.
His father was a shrewd judge of the handicap and David has proved equally as astute.
He trained Buena Vista to win the hugely competitive Pertemps Final in 2010 and 2011.
He also won the Ultima Handicap Chase twice with Un Temps Pour Tout in 2016 and 2017.
Pipe has also picked up some valuable staying prizes on the flat, notably the Chester Cup with Mamlook and the Ascot Stakes with Junior.
David Pipe – Most Famous Victories
Comply Or Die won the 2008 Aintree Grand National for David Pipe and jockey Timmy Murphy. The race had been the target since winning the Eider Chase at Newcastle in February. Comply Or Die returned to Aintree the following year and finished second to 100-1 outsider Mon Mome. He finished twelfth in 2010 and was pulled up on his final career start in the race in 2011.
The 33-1 win for Western Warhorse in the 2014 Arkle took almost everyone by surprise. He lowered the colours of fancied Irish raider Champagne Fever and Trifolium.
Other famous winners for the yard include Moon Racer in the 2015 Champion Bumper, Gaspara in the 2007 Fred Winter Hurdle and Dynaste’s victory in the 2014 Ryanair Chase.
Summary of Trainer David Pipe
David Pipe had some big boots to fill when taking over the yard from his father.
He made it almost a seamless transition and has gone on to achieve success in some of the biggest races in the sport.
Plenty more winners are sure to follow in the months and years ahead for Pond House Racing Stables.
