Day 1 of Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting

The first day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting at Newmarket Racecourse takes place on Thursday 22nd September.

The Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting is a 3 day event and the first day is one you shouldn’t miss!

At 3:00 pm on day 1, the Tattersalls Stakes will take place as the feature race.

The main opening days races are as follows:

13:15 – Turners British EBF Maiden Stakes

Starting off the festival is the Class 4 Turners British EBF Maiden Stakes.

The 1:15 pm race is for Colts and Geldings aged 2 only and is ran a distance of 1 mile.

13:50 – Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Nursery

Race 2 is the Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Nursery.

This Class 2 race takes place at 1:50 pm with a 1 mile distance for horses aged two.

14:25 – British Stallion Studs Ebf Premier Fillies’ Handicap

The 2:25 pm race is the Class 2 British Stallion Studs Ebf Premier Fillies’ Handicap.

This race is for horse aged 3 and older and has a total distance of 6 furlongs.

15:00 – Tattersalls Stakes (Group 3) (Registered As The Somerville Tattersall Stakes)

The Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes 2025 is the feature race on the opening day and is a seven-furlong race for two-year-old colts and geldings.

Although it has not produced a Classic winner in modern times, it has been won by Wind And Wuthering (1981), Grand Lodge (1993) and Wichita (2019) who were all placed in the 2000 Guineas.

Other high-class winners include Opening Verse (1988), Where Or When (2001) and Elarqam (2017).

15:35 – Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes

The 2025 Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes is a listed race for three-year-olds and upwards over two miles.

The race can attract Ascot Gold Cup horses as well as providing an opportunity for high class handicappers.

John Gosden has a fine recent record in the race with four winners in the last nine seasons; Caucus (2012, 2013), Flying Officer (2015) and Face The Facts (2017).

16:10 – Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap

The Class 2 Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap is the 6th race to take place on Day 1.

This 4:10 pm race is held for horses aged 3 and over and has a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs

16:45 – Lifetime In Racing Awards Handicap

Next is the 4:45 pm Lifetime In Racing Awards Handicap.

This Class 4 race is 1 mile long and is open to horses aged 3 and over.

17:20 – Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap

The final race of day 1 is the Class 4 Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap.

This 5:20 pm race has a total distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs and is open to horses aged 3 and older.
