Famous Thoroughbred Stakes Winners
This race was originally run as the Surplice Stakes in 1986, acquiring its current title along with Listed status in 1998. It was elevated to Group 3 in 2012 and produced a dead-heat that year between Archbishop and Trumpet Major.
1997 winner Cape Cross had finished eighth in the 2000 Guineas for John Gosden and did not reach his peak until later in his career. He won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in 1998 and the following year claimed the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Cape Cross became a successful stallion for Godolphin with his progeny including the winners of more than 20 Group 1 races worldwide.
2002 winner Where Or When had been competing at the highest level, finishing down the field in the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby. He enjoyed a confidence-boosting win in this race and went on to lower the colours of Hawk Wing in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. He was the horse of a lifetime for Epsom trainer Terry Mills.
The race produced another subsequent Group 1 winner in 2003 when Court Masterpiece won for Ed Dunlop and Johnny Murtagh. He was particularly effective at Goodwood, winning the 2005 Lennox Stakes and the 2006 Sussex Stakes.
All previous winners of this race were put in the shade by the emergence of Baaeed in 2021. William Haggas trained the horse for the Shadwell Estate with their retained rider Jim Crowley on board. Starting 2-5 favourite, he trounced Chester Dee Stakes winner El Drama by six and a half lengths and already looked like a superstar in the making.
Group 1 victories followed in the Prix du Moulin (2021), Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (2021), Lockinge Stakes (2022), Queen Anne Stakes (2022), Sussex Stakes (2022) and International Stakes (2022). His International Stakes victory earned him an official rating of 135, just 1lb below Sea The Stars and 5lbs below Frankel.
Key Thoroughbred Stakes Trials
The key trial for this race is the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket. Duke Of Hazzard, Beat The Bank (2017), Montiridge (2013) and Baaeed (2021) had all been successful in that race before winning here.
The Jersey Stakes is another race worth looking at for form clues. Thikriyaat (2016) and Rocchigiani (2022) both ran in that Royal Ascot race on their previous outing.
The Joel Stakes at Newmarket has been the most popular choice for the winner’s next start. Beat The Bank won both races in 2017 while Wannabe Yours (2014) and Tilsit (2020) were both beaten at Newmarket. Baaeed stepped up successfully to Group 1 level on his next start, winning the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Shock results have been few and far between in this race. The longest-priced winner during the same period was Tilsit (2020) who returned at 10-1. He had won his previous race by 19 lengths and owed his generous starting price to the disappointing odds-on favourite Khaloosy (4-7) who could finish only third.
