Why Do Racehorses Wear Tongue Straps or Tongue Ties?

Racehorses wear tongue straps or a tongue tie to help with their breathing.

A tongue tie or tongue strap is a piece of material, normally made of nylon or a rubber band, that sits between the horse’s tongue and lower jaw.

The purpose of a tongue tie is to stop the horse from swallowing its tongue when racing which although not serious can cause discomfort and affect performance.

How Do You Know a Horse is Wearing a Tongue Strap for the First Time?

If the horse is wearing a Tongue Strap for the first time then this is indicated as t1 on the horse racecards.

If a horse is wearing Tongue Straps (but has previously worn a TongueStrap) then there will be a t next to the weight it is carrying.

Here is an example of a horse racing racecard which shows “t1” beside the racehorse weight to highlight the horse is running in Tongue Straps for the 1st time.

The t1 symbol indicates Tongue Strap and the number one indicates it is the first time wearing the application of Tongue Straps.
